Thatch that requires a solid surface would benefit from a sub-surface of plywood so that it the material sits securely on the surface. 

Straw Roof Thatching

Cereal straw and water reeds are the two main materials used for thatching. By opting for cereal straw, you can achieve various characteristics. Long straw is threshed to remove the grain, leaving the straw broken and tangled. After undergoing some preparation, the straw can be used to create a roof that boasts a shaggy finish with a neat edge. 

Combed cereal straw is also threshed to remove the grain, but the weeds, broken stems, and leaf are also removed via an attachment to the threshing machine. With the processed straw being straight, the roof appears smoother with rounded edges. 

Thatch Repairs and Maintenance

Maintenance is required more on a thatched roof than a standard roof due to the materials. Generally, every 10-15 years, the ridge of the thatch will need replacing, but there is not a standard lifespan. If you require repairs, then we can put you in touch with a skilled thatcher.

Reed Roof Thatching  

A reed roof is made from water reed, which is a grass that you can find in wetland areas. During the winter, the reed is cut, allowing new shoots to appear. The reed is stacked to dry before getting cleaned and bundled into different lengths. By opting for a reed roof, you will achieve a similar appeared to combed straw, but the edges are generally sharper.
