26 Nov Best Thatched House Competition 2017 -2018
The Best Thatched House Competition, run by NSMT, is open to all thatchers across the country and has been running since 1990. The competition is run every 2 years to give all thatchers the chance to create that ‘perfect’ roof. As many properties can be submitted for judging, as long as they had been thatched after 1st of January 2017 and completed before the end of December 2018.
The first round of the judging process is by photograph and it is important to show the best work on 4 good A4 size photos of the property being entered. The better the photo the easier the judges can select the best roofs.
Pre-judging from the photos took place in January 2019 to make a short list of 6 roofs which have now been inspected by the team of judges. The judges were Paul Reading, Lee Miller (a former winner of the competition) and Andrew Raffle.
The judging took 2 days and covered a distance of over 600 miles from Leicestershire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire to Essex; from there through Surrey and Hampshire and finally up through the Cotswolds to Gloucestershire. The quality of work was exceptional, and the owners of the properties were so proud of their thatchers. It is sometimes difficult to compare work from different regions of the country but by looking deeper than the chocolate box cottages the best craftsmanship is revealed.
Some of the things the judges looked for were:
- Overall looks and fine detail of work
- Selection and use of material
- Lay of the material
- Detailing of the ridge
- Neatness of netting
The winners will be announced at the NSMT Annual Conference Dinner on 23rd of March 2019.
