Thatchers were given a collective voice in 1947 under the Master Thatcher Associations (MTAs), where were based by county. Twenty years later, the voice expanded national to form the first version of the National Society of Master Thatchers. After many decades and multiple name changes, the NSMT now represents around 350 thatchers, which is equivalent to around 30% of the industry.

Our purpose is to give thatchers support and a platform, but we are also working hard to sustain the future of thatch. Our dedicated team conduct research and support conservation while encouraging new innovations for thatch. The primary purpose, though, is to support owners and thatchers in maintaining stunning roofs on all manner of buildings.

As mentioned, in the countryside you are likely to see properties with thatched roofs; whether they be a small cottage or a country pub. Here at NSMT, we are also known for our apprentice training. This involves a hopeful being assigned a mentor from the NSMT, and being taught all the skills and techniques needed to forge a career in thatching.
