About Thatch

Thatch comes in two types of material, cereal straw and water reeds. Combed cereal straw is threshed to remove the grain and has the weeds, leaf and broken stems removed. Once processed, the straw resembles a reed and can create a smooth carpet-like finish.  

Water reeds are blades of grass that grow in wetland areas, but the length is determined depending on the available nutrients. When the reed is cut in the winter months, new shoots appear and are stacked loosely together before being cleaned. Once sorted into different lengths, the thatcher can use the reed to construct the roof. Generally, the style is that of a combed straw roof, but has much sharper edges.
